Open MTV Gold

MTV was a live broadcast. Streaming is on demand. MTV Gold splits the difference — a synced 'live' stream where every visitor sees the same video at the same moment, rebuilt from YouTube, with a time machine to any day in MTV's first eighteen years.

Load the app and you land on a synced stream — the same video every other visitor is watching right now. A matchbox Twenty video plays muted, a neon chiron overlays the artist and title in the bottom left, and a pill at the bottom says TAP TO UNMUTE. This is not on-demand. This is appointment TV, reconstructed.

The sync model is the whole idea: real time maps to MTV time on a cycling schedule. Each week is one year of programming — Week 1 is 1981, Week 2 is 1982, and it loops every nineteen weeks. Every visitor on the site sees the same thing at the same moment, just like broadcast. Break the sync with the Time Machine button and you travel to any year, any month, any day, any time of day — morning through late night — and the stream loads a schedule appropriate to that moment.

Schedules are not hand-curated. A deterministic seeded PRNG generates a full day of programming for any date in the 1981–1999 range: music videos pulled from a 340-song catalog, tagged by era, genre, and year; bumpers and station IDs inserted every few videos; show blocks scheduled by day of week and date range — Headbangers Ball on Saturday nights, 120 Minutes on Sunday, Yo! MTV Raps in the afternoon. The rotation system mimics how MTV actually programmed: heavy rotation for songs from the current year, medium for two years back, recurrent for older catalog. Six thousand nine hundred thirty-nine daily schedule JSON files were pre-generated and shipped as static assets, so the schedule for any date loads in a single fetch.

The Shows browser is a grid of twelve MTV programs with era ranges and episode counts — Headbanger's Ball, Yo! MTV Raps, 120 Minutes, TRL, Remote Control, Beavis & Butt-Head, Liquid Television, The Real World — each color-coded by category. Click a show and the stream becomes that show's episode list, with prev/next moving through episodes chronologically. The Program Guide is a slide-up overlay showing the full day's schedule, with the current item marked NOW. The Specials hub leads with the 1988 VMAs and category rows for Spring Break, Unplugged, and other tentpole events.
